THE COMPARISON OF SOME PROPERTIES OF GOSSYPOL RECRYSTALLIZED FROM DIFFERENT SOLVENTS

  • Abstract: Some properties of gossypol samples recrystallized from three different solvents are compared. One of them. mp 213~214℃, lumps, was obtained from petroleum ether (60~90℃); another, mp 198~199℃, prism form, from chloroform; the 3 rd, mp 183~184℃, plates, from ether—alcohol—water (1:2:2). UV spectra of the above samples of gossypol are alike. They exhibit the same maximum wavelength and intensity of absorption in the same solvent: λmaxcyclohexune 236, 286 and 358 nm (E1cm1% 399), 276nm (Shoulder); λmaxCHCl3 244, 289 and365 nm (E1cm1% 399), 279 nm (Shoulder); and λmaxEtOH 236, 289 and 378nm (E1cm1% 350), 279 nm(Shoulder).In IR spectra (KBr film), νmax cm-1 1610(C=O) was observed in all of the samples. This indicates that they exist in aldehyde form in the same way. At νmax1 cm-1 2950 and 2860(C-H), 1439(—CH=),I380,1336(—CH3), 1290,1180, 1055 and 840 there were similar absorptions in the spectra of the three crystalline forms. The difference was only at νmax1 cm-1 3400~3500 (Ar-OH)and 700~800. It could be due to their different degree of hydrogen bonding and configuration. 1HNMR (CDCl3) δ 1:56,d,(CH3)2=C—; 2.16,s, (CH2—C3); 3.92, sept,—CH=(Me)2; 6.45,s, (HO—C6); 7. 79,s, (H—C4); 11.12,s, HC=O. They appeared to have the same spectral characteristic. Unremarkable distinction of their chemical shift in 1HNMR spectra at δ 5.96, 5.89 or 5.82(HC--C1) and 15.12,15.18 :or 15.24 (HO--C7) depends on their crystalline form (lumps, prism or plates respectively) and concentration.
