Abstract:
The Chinese medicine "Compound Mixture of Two Fairies" has been used for treatment of hypertensive disease in women. It also lowered the blood pressure in renal hypertensive dogs. In this paper its hypotensive effects were compared in 5 types of hypertensive rats induced by:Ⅰ. conflicting conditioned signals,Ⅱ. unilateral constriction of renal artery, Ⅲ. cauterization of left adrenal cortex, Ⅳ. orchiectomy, and Ⅴ. ovariectomy. Besides, examinations were made on the vaginal smear, vestibular chronaxy and pressor responses. The "Compound Mixture" was given orally in the dose of 10g/kg daily for 2 weeks. The“% of hypotensive areas” for systolic depression amounted to—9%, —11% and —15% for Ⅰ,Ⅱ,and Ⅳ respectively (highly significantly different from the controls), and—6% and—7% for Ⅲ and Ⅴ respectively (non-significant). After the“Compound Mixture” was fed'to immature rats in the dose of 10g/kg daily for 7 weeks, neither effects on growths and oestrus nor improvement in the oestrous disturbance were observed in Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅲ. It could prolong the vestibular chronaxy of Ⅱ, but not that of the others. It did not influence the pressor responses to norepinephrine and pitressin. To epitomize, the hypotensive action of the "Compound Mixture" was not mediated through improvement of the function of the sexual glands nor through the depression of pressor response. Further studies are needed.
