Abstract:
The crude extract of the bulbs of Shui-Hsien (
Narcissus Tazetta, L. var.
Chinensis) has a pharmacological action Very much like ergot preparations. This ergot-like action is similar to the action of Shih-Suan. (
Lycoris radiata Herb.) described by authors in a previous paper. The crude extract of the bulbs of Shui-Hsien has a powerful contractive action on the isolated uteri of guinea-pig and rabbit. Exccessive doses produce prolonged tonic contraction. When tested on the uterus of animals
in situ the same powerful action occurred. When 1 gm of crude extract of Shui-Hsien was injected into a rooster's breast muscle, the tip of the comb and wattles became blue and cold after 24 hours. This phenomenon may be continued to 20 days. Shui-Hsien caused abortion in pregnant guinea-pigs, stimulated the isolated rabbit ileum and caused emesis in pigeons.
