Abstract: Jiu Bi Ying, the bark of Ilex rotunda Thunb., is used as medicine in South China. The glucosides, ilexanin A and ilexanin-B, isolated from the bark, have been reported by Zhu Renhong (Chu Jen-hung) et al without describing their structures. This paper reports the isolation and identification of a hemostatic constituent-Crystal B. At the same time, crystal A and C were also obtained and the studies are in progress.Crystal B (Ⅰ) was isolated from an ethanol extract of the bark powder by alumina column chromatography. It was found to be identical with ilexanin-A by comparison between their mp, TLC, UV, MS and IR data.On the basis of IR, MS, NMR and chemical evidences of crystal B (Ⅰ), its acetate and the oxidative products of its aglycone (Ⅲ)(Ⅳ), the structure of crystal B is elucidated as 3,5-dimethexy-4-hydroxy-cinnamic alcohol-4-0-glucoside, i. e. Syringin.
