Abstract:
Commercial loquat leaves are the dried leaves of
Eriobotrya japonica Lindl. They are used in Chinese medicine as an anticoughing and antivomiting remedy. A detailed account of their morphological and histological characters is made together with six plates of illustration. The important diagnostic features of loquat leaves are:upper epidermal cells with striated cuticle;lower epidermis with anomocytic(ranunculaceous)type of stomata;epidermal trichomes, unicellular(rarely bicellular),700-1100-1800μ long,12-15-18μwide at the base and 18-21-30μwide at the middle, more nu- merous at the lower surface;mesophyll,dorsi-ventral,with 3-4 layers of palisadal cells under the upper epidermis only;calcium oxalate crystals, prismatic and clu- stered, present in mesophyll;vessels, chiefly spiral, diameter 9-12-21μ;pericytic fibres,12-14μ wide and 400-800-1000μlong,usually in bundles, walls lignified and moderately thickened with simple,slit-like pits;palisade ratio,7-8-9.
