Abstract:
Composite Recipe Xi-Tong, which has long been used in joint pain in Chinese medicine, is a mixture consisting of
Siegesbechia glabrescens Makino. and
Clerodendron trichotomum Thunb. Since
Bidens bipinnata L. is more easily available and often used as a substitute for
S. glabrescens, a study was made on the effect of Composite Recipe Zhen-Tong, a mixture of
B. bipinnata and
C. trichotomum, on formalin arthritis and egg-white oedema of the ankle joint in rats. Oral administration of an aqueous or alcholic extract of Composite Recipe Zhen-Tong at a dose of 10 g/kg twice daily for five days, significantly reduced the formalin irritation arthritis of the hind leg of the rat. The therapeutic effect of Composite Recipe Zhen-Tong at this dose was comparable to that of sodium salicylate using 300 mg/kg. Pretreatment of the rat with Composite Recipe Zhen-Tong also markedly inhibited the development of egg-white oedema of the ankle joint. When
B. bipinnata or
C. trichotomum alone was administered, no effect was observed. Composite Recipe Zhen-Tong has been used in rheumatoid arthritis. Marked therapeutic effects were obtained. No side effects or toxic actions were observed.
