STUDIES ON THE CONSTITUENTS OF HONG HAN LIAN (HYPERICUM ASCYRON L.)

The whole plant of Hong Han Lian (Hypericum ascyron L.) was reported to have curative effect in the treatment of chronic bronchitis patients. Pharmacological study showed that it has antiasthmatic, antitussive and expectorant activities. For the exploration of the active principles, five flavonoids were isolated by polyamide or silica gel column chromatography and identified as quercetin, kaempferol, hyperoside, isoquercitrin and rutin respectively according to spectroseopic analysis (UV, IR, NMR), preparation of derivatives, acid hydrolysis and determination of physico-chemical coastants.
