STUDIES ON ANTIBILHARZIAL DRUGS,XX.INTENSIVE TREATMENT WITH Sb-11,Sb-5 AND ITS SALTS

Abstract
In the 14-day-course treatment of schistosomiasis japonica in mice and in rabbits,intrave- nous injections of Sb-11 and Sb-5 exhibited a higher therapeutic activity-than tartar emetic. The present study compared tartar emetic,Sb-11,Sb-5 and 13 salts of the latter compound in the intensive treatment. Infected rabbits and dogs received intravenously Sb-5 b.i.d,for 3 or 7 days. Its toxicity was less than that of tartar emetic,as evidenced by the tolerant doses, electrocardiogram and the liver func- tion(sulfobromophthalein retention)test.Regarding the therapeutic potency Sb-5 is slightly better than tartar emetic. Sb-126,a monosodium salt of Sb-5,exhibited a similar toxicity and therapeutic effect. But Sb-126 is soluble in saline, more stable and thus more convenient to administer. Sb-11 showed no promising result in the intensive(3-or 7-day-course)treatment of schis- tosome-infected rabbits and dogs.
