CHEMICAL STUDIES OF RAUWOLFIA VERTICILLATA (LOUR.) BAILL. I.

An alkaloid and a flavonoid glycoside were isolated from the leafs of Rauwolfia verticillata which had been collected in Hainan. The alkaloid was identified as aricine (C₂₂H₃₆N₂O₄) by means of the infra-red and ultraviolet spectra as well as the melting points of its derivatives. The flavonoid glycoside was proved to be as robinin (C₃₃H₄₀O₁₉) by the R_f value of paper chromatography, and also after hydrolysis, galactose and rhamnose in proportion of 1:2 were obtained.
