DETERMINATION OF GOSSYPOL WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY

Gossypol is an antifertility agent for males. Recently it has been found that gossypol may also be used as an effective drug for endometriosis, myoma of uterus and menopausal functional bleeding.In order to evaluate the quality of gossypol, a rapid, specific and precise method using HPLC was developed. The system was recommended: on a YWG -SO₃H column(4.0mm×25cm)using methanol—citrate buffer pH 6.3 (55: 45) as mobile phase.The cotton plant materials were analyzed as follows:The powdered sample was macerated with acetone for 16 hours, then filtered and the residue washed. The extract was evaporated to dryness under vacuum. The residue was dissolved in 1% HOAc—CHCl₃ solution. A definite amount of this sample solution was chromatographed and quantified by peak area.
