A SIMPLE METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION OF DIPHENYLACETIC ACID

A simple method with high yield for preparing the important raw material diphenylacetic acid, by condensing mandelic acid with benzene in the presence of A1CI₃,has been described. Using toluene or chlorobenzene instead of benzene in the condensation,the corresponding phenyl- p-tolylacetic acid and phenyl-p-chlorophenylacetic acid were also obtained.
