A NEW SPECIES AND A VARIETY'S NEW NOMENCLATURE OF THE MEDICINAL XIN-YI(FLOS MAGNOLIAE)

1. A new species, Magnolia pilocarpa Z. Z. Zhao et Z. W. Xie has been found in Loutian Xian, Hubei Province. Its flower buds are being used as Chinese drug Xin-Yi (Flos Magnoliae). This new species is closely reinted to M. biondii Pamp. It is characterized by: (1) leaves obovate, abruptly acuminate at the apex; (2) flowers larger, the outer perianthes smaller than the inner, narrowly triangular; (3) carpels densely pilose, ripe carpels pilose.2. A new name, Magnolia denudata Desr. vat. dilutipurpurascens Z. W. Xie et Z. Z. Zhao, is made as a result of a new combination with an earlier homonym.
