THE EFFECT OF AGRIMOPHOL AND ITS COMBINATION WITH NIRIDAZOLE IN EXPERIMENTAL SCHISTOSOMIASIS

  • Agrimophol is a phenolic compound obtained from Agrirnonia pilosa Ledeb. Its hepatic shift activity and schistosomicidal effect were confirmed. The latter effect was for the first time discovered in herbal drugs. Owing to the low therapeutic effect of Agrimophol, it could not be used alone. Concurrent administration of Agrimophol with niridazole produced a satisfactory therapeutic effect. This experiment showed that in dog schistosomiasis the combination of these two drugs caused a decrease in the number of female worm to an extent of 98~100%.In the dog, apart from gastro-intestinal tract distirbance, the toxic reaction usually encountered was associated with optic lesion. Pathological observation demonstrated the above mentioned change. In Rhesus monkeys given high oral dosages of Agrimophol no optic lesion was found in experimental animals.
