THE EFFECT OF SODIUM 1,2-DIHYDROXY BENZENE 3,5-DISULPHONATE ON THE DISTRIBUTION AND THE ELIMINATION OF ANTIMONY AFTER ADMINISTRATION OF TARTAR EMETIC

  • The intravenous administration of sodium 1,2,-dihydroxy benzene 3,5,-disulphonate (S.D.D.) at the dosage of 500 mg/kg into rabbits immediately following i.v. administration of tartar emetic at the dosage of 8 mg/kg had profound effect on the distribution and elimination of tartar emetic. Sb contents of 2.1γ/gm and 0.6γ/gm were found respectively, in the blood 1/2 hour and 2 hours after i.v. administration of tartar emetic alone, whereas the Sb contents amounted to 6.1γ/gm and 2.1γ/gm respectively, when S.D.D. was given immediately after. Experiments in rabbits treated with tartar emetic showed that the administration of S.D.D. decreased the Sb content by 31.6%, 36.3% and 34.8% in liver, heart and Schistosome worm respectively. The amount of Sb excreted in the urine of animals that received S.D.D. was found to be 2.3 and 6.8 times higher at the 1st and 3rd hour respectively after the administration of the drug, than that of animals that received tartar emetic alone.
